Hilo is where many start their big island adventure. It rains alot here, around 128 inches a year, and accomodations can be found at bargain rates, except for the spring Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. If you arrive the week after Easter, get tickets or call ahead! This is also the gateway to Mauna Kea via the saddle road (check with your car rental agency to see if this is covered) which is best done with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. There is night life, restaurants, theaters, and all the other amenities of any city.

Natural Wonders: Wailuku River State Park, Boiling Pots, Kaumana Caves, Ana Puka Cave.

Activities: Golf (Hilo Country Club & Golf Course, Naniloa CC), mountain biking, surfing, hiking, wind surfing, spelunking.

Attractions: Panaewa Fainforest Zoo and Equestrian Center, Macadamia Nut Factory and Orchards.
Beaches: (clockwise) Honolii, Onekahakaha, Leleiwi, Lehia, Richardson.
